282 Smith St didn't build itself. These are the people behind the furniture and fit-out that bring the space to life — and where you can find their work for yourself.

UBI PRESENTS: KIM WESTCOTT

VISIT SITE

An ongoing series of creative expressions at Underground By ISY.

On display at 282 Smith St: “Downpour” (2026), acrylic on aluminium panel, 180 x 100cm — placed with us by the artist and MAGMA Galleries.

What's the story behind this piece?

This piece is part of a larger body of work in which Kim reimagines how nature is perceived. Her abstract compositions draw on natural configurations and subtle figurative forms, evoking both the structure and spirit of the natural world as a reflection of human feeling — inspired by the forest surrounding her studio in North-East Victoria, where she's lived for over 25 years.

About the artist

Kim Westcott is a Melbourne-born painter who studied at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and worked as a master printmaker in New York and Brazil before returning to live and work in North-East Victoria, where she now focuses on painting and acrylic engravings. Her work is held at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) and the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW).

Why we're sharing this piece

MAGMA Galleries is excited about this collaboration with Underground By ISY, connecting with the broader locus of cultural and artistic activity in Collingwood.

THE FEELTER

VISIT SITE

The Feelter furnished 282 Smith St — from the main seating area to the change rooms — with pieces we fell for the moment we saw them. Everything you see in-store, and a few things we didn't have room for, is available to shop today.

What's the story behind Feelter? How did it all start?

At The Feelter, it’s our mission to make beautiful interiors accessible to everyone. It all started with a passion for design & aesthetic with the approach that everyone should be able to design the room they want the way they want it with no compromise. There is a resurgence within Australia of people redesigning their interiors to reflect modern contemporary settings and not only do we want to offer the affordable access to designer furniture locally, but also for people to make it theirs. Within our range of sofas, chairs and tables we offer a varying array of fabrics and colours so people don’t have to compromise on their vision. From our humble beginnings in a storage shed we’ve since upgraded to a Showroom and Warehouse location in Melbourne showcasing all the fantastic and unique furniture on display for people to experience.

What do you look for when curating furniture for Feelter?

The Feelter is a play on words for ‘filter’, with the philosophy being that we are ‘filtering’ out the products that won’t quite work inside Australian interiors. From our suppliers we expect products made with care and products that are made to last. But most of all we look for products that offer a person the choice to design and fill their interiors with exactly what they want, from the structural material to their personal preference in upholstery.

What do you think makes a retail space feel inviting and memorable?

In a retail space you’re trying to sell a lifestyle. Therefore we believe it’s important for a space to be open, calm and collected to settle a customer right at home and experience what it might be like to bring products home and into their life. What makes a showroom especially memorable is the personalities that run the space. People that care for the space and are excited about sharing what the company is about.

What drew you to collaborate with UBI on our new retail space?

We consider ourselves a company that is in ways similar to UBI, with an Asian/Australian foundation and the same approach to being apart of the developing styles of todays age. It’s a good opportunity to celebrate a lifestyle that allows an individual to express themselves without limit.

ALUM STUDIO

VISIT SITE

Alum Studio built the anodised-aluminium fixtures and finishes around the store — a quieter, more structural kind of craft that holds the whole space together. In-store shoot photos are coming after our opening.

What is the story behind Alum Studio?

Alum Studio was engineered to balance quiet simplicity with rigorous structural detail. The objective is an effortless aesthetic—clean, industrial geometry that reveals its underlying complexity only upon closer inspection. Every piece is engineered to flat-pack without compromising spatial presence or physical materiality.

What details might people miss at first glance?

Micro-details designed for quiet discovery. Every custom screw is etched with the "ALUM studio" logo—a detail you notice during assembly that speaks to the passion behind the build. Beyond the hardware, the anodized aluminum surfaces interact dynamically with ambient light, catching and reflecting sunlight throughout the day to bring living warmth to precision metalwork.

Which pieces are on display, and what inspired them?

Featured tonight are Bookshelf 01, Modular Table 01, Side Table 01, Coffee Table 01, Candle 01, and Vase 01.
Inspiration stems from unexpected micro-design details. For example, Vase 01 was inspired by the octagonal geometry and micro-engraved craftsmanship of a 1990s Cartier Santos watch discovered in Japan. That tension between sharp outer geometry and subtle hidden detail directly shaped the piece—a solid octagonal profile offset by a seamless circular aperture.
